Rules

Key rules to know

Touch-move rule

If you touch a piece, you must move it (if a legal move exists). If you touch an opponent's piece, you must capture it.

Time forfeit

If your clock runs to zero, you lose the game — unless your opponent has insufficient mating material.

Draw claims

50-move rule, threefold repetition, and stalemate all apply. Ask the arbiter if you're unsure.

Phones & devices

All phones and electronic devices must be switched off during play. Using computer assistance — including chess engines or AI — results in immediate disqualification from the tournament.

Conduct

Shake hands before and after every game. Distracting or disrespectful behaviour will not be tolerated.

👶

First tournament? No worries.

Absolute beginners are welcome. There is no minimum rating requirement. Our arbiters are friendly and patient, and will explain anything that's unclear. We recommend a few lessons first so your child knows the basic rules — but beyond that, just come and enjoy!
